You're right. Thank you for reminding me.

[ it's said earnestly. ]

Find what, exactly?

Oh...

Ahaha...

It's, uh. Not a particularly savory story...you'd likely disapprove of my...methods.

Well.

[ it's..strange. thinking of the past in this way. in a way, it pricks at his heart — the smile he gives her is pained, but it is a smile nonetheless. ]

Gratien and I looted Barnier's manor before we made a run for it. Among our loot was your brooch...he was hellbent on keeping it for himself, for whatever reason. I wouldn't stop hassling him, however — so eventually...he told me he'd give it up if I were to beat him in a drinking contest.

[ a breath escapes him. it's something between a chuckle and a strained exhale. ]

Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for myself, I can hold my liquor better than most. We drank that entire damn tavern out. The barmaid was exasperated beyond belief. We came to a draw as a result, but he ended up blacking out — so I emerged victorious by default.

In contrast...a search across the station is nothing, really.

[ her insults slide off of his back. he's in another world right now. ]

He didn't. That's just who he was.

[ he misses it. what, exactly? hah. all of it.

jacopo turns to walk forward. ]

We should get going.

I said I'd find it, no matter what.

[ he doesn't look at her as he says that. ]

If you're worried, don't be. I was thinking. That's all.

...

[ there's a silence. ]

There isn't...any point in mourning what's been lost. In mourning everything that I killed.

And yet...

Hah.

I know that.

[ wordlessly, he keeps walking. his pace quickens. his fists clench. he does not look at her. he does what he always does when he is hurt: push her out of his world entirely.

how pathetic. ]

[ ...

her voice cuts through the fog of his mind — it always does. his shoulders stiffen. still, he cannot find the courage to look at her.

but he will listen. he will permit her to slip into the confines of his mind, of his world.

there is no world without her.

she speaks of the future. but losing her once, twice, has broken him.

he doesn't know if his heart can bear a third. ]

...I don't know if there is a future for someone like myself.

But I want to ensure...with whatever remains of my soul...that there is one for you.

[ a pause. ]

I'm sorry. For saying what I did earlier. I know what you're like...you take it upon yourself to comfort others, because you believe it is what you must do. I shouldn't have put you in that position.

You don't have to say anything at all...no matter what, I need you to know that.

[ ...

in the sea of hurt, of sin, of all he has done to her — it is these small moments that gleam through the waters. a flicker of trust. she gives this to him when she knows he was once the very blade that killed her.

sadly, he smiles to himself. ]

I see.

...Thank you for telling me. It was kind of you to let her stay with you. I imagine that she feels alone without...him.

[ something shines from afar. his eyes brighten.

jacopo begins to run. ]
